Apu? Epu? Opu? This ruins the puzzle for me. Crossing that, the Satyajit Ray’s _ Trilogy. Now, I consider myself a decent NFL fan, although admittedly a young one, and I have no idea who this guy is. Ironically this is something I tend to see only in early-week puzzles - where it’s least appropriate given the supposedly easier difficulty and the trouble it might give solvers. But please don’t have two obscure proper nouns cross at a key letter that is non-obvious.

It’s OK to have two obscure proper nouns. Listen, it’s OK to have an obscure proper noun in your crossword. “_ Network” for USA? Again, pretty lame clue.Īnd finally, that pet peeve of mine.

The year 1501? That’s…a pretty lame clue. I’ll allow it because the words are pretty similar to the English, so not too much actual knowledge of French is required.īut then, we get some more bad stuff. But, to be fair, I guess that can be spun as a nice, related trio (indeed, the clues reference each other). SEURAT - I’m not really up on my artists, so he seemed like a tough answer. Nothing against French in particular - it just seemed like a lot for one puzzle. This puzzle has too many proper nouns as is. Is out of alignment, as a car wheel = TOES IN. 2013 best seller subtitled “Women, Work and the Will to Lead” = LEAN IN. Bit of a challenging word there, but we’ll give it a pass. I’m going for the card theme, as you can see. Perhaps “Card character?” Orson Scott Card, that is, author of Ender’s Game. I wonder if something could have been done with ENDER. Everything else was pretty good, though - decent clues, reasonably interesting answers, and Wednesday-appropriate. Also, had a few issues with OLD DAYS (should be “Olden days” in my opinion - old days just sounds like you had some days in your fridge and you aren’t sure if they’re still good), and something just feels a little off about ICE FREE. Didn’t like OSH, UPI, MIN, AHA (moment), RAZR (even though I knew it), and AAS (yuck). Not sure on THE COPA, but liked VIP ROOM next to it. The fill was pretty good, although it had some weak points. It took me until the very end, when I solved the revealer, to see it, despite having all the other theme answers in place.

#DENT OR CRACK CROSSWORD CLUE PLUS#

The theme was not only satisfying and fairly dense - 5 answers with two parts each, plus the revealer - but also hard to figure out. Spoiler-free one-liner: Solid Wednesday puzzle. Constructor: Alex Vratsanos and Sam Ezersky.
